Gas prices fall

Average retail gasoline prices in Rochester have fallen 0.3 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.66/g Sunday, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 319 gas outlets in Rochester. This compares with the national average that has increased 3.0 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.27/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

Including the change in gas prices in Rochester during the past week, prices Sunday were 21.9 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 14.5 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has decreased 13.2 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 1.7 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago.

Diane Hannum to appear on Senior Report Saturday

Senior Report with Reed Powers will have Diane Hannum as the guest on Saturday’s television program. Hannum is the executive director of the Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation. The live, call-in program airs from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday mornings. Individuals may call 753-5225 during that time with questions, comments or a shout-out. The program is rebroadcast each day at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. for some communities. Reed Powers, host of Senior Report, has been producing the television program since 1995. The series highlights senior citizen club news for 15 minutes with the remainder of the hour-long program devoted to the featured guest. The guest is subject to change.

Senior Report is shown live on Saturday mornings on Time Warner cable systems covering the following communities: Brocton, Cas-sadaga, Chautauqua, Fre-donia, Mayville, North Harmony, Portland, Ripley, Sherman, Stockton and Westfield on Channel 5. In Dunkirk, Falconer, Forestville, Hanover, Irving, Jamestown, Lakewood and Silver Creek the program is on channel 19. The show originates at the Access Channel 5 studio in Mayville.

Forestville Board of Ed changes meeting date

The Forestville Board of Education will meet on Jan. 10 at 6 p.m. in the high school library. The meeting date has been rescheduled from today. All future board meetings will be held in the high school library.

Local Red Cross Chapter responds to help house fire victims

The Southwestern NY American Red Cross Dis-aster Action Team responded to provide disaster relief following a house fire on Hebner Street on Tuesday.

DAT volunteer Phil Baker and Jeanie Schiffer was on scene to provide the initial disaster assistance. Temporary housing, clothing, and meals are services typically offered to address emergency needs. The local Red Cross chapter will continue working with the families and their recovery process if additional services or referrals are necessary.

Free female self defense class Friday

Albert Ramirez will host a free female self defense class on Friday from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Family Martial Arts Center, 355 Central Ave. in Fredonia next door to the Family Video. Be sure to enter at the LA Nails entrance.

The class will consist of rape prevention, awareness, workplace harassment, dating warning signs and basic and advance self defense drills. Moms are encouraged to participate in the class with their daughters so the children know they have the support from mom. Many times a child hesitates to communicate concerns to the parents out of fear and embarrassment.

The class is designed for ages 12 and up. Woman with disabilities and restrictions are encouraged to attend as organizers will offer the same lesson but will work around that predicament. Bring your own water and wear comfortable attire. A weekly program will be offered to those who may be interested after the seminar. Call 672-6683 or email karateman1965@hotmail.com to register.

Dunkirk Senior Center Sunday Gala Jan. 13

On Jan. 13, the Dunkirk Senior Center will hold its Sunday Gala. Doors will open at 11 a.m., with coffee and hors d’oeuvres served at 11:30 a.m. Brunch will begin at 12:15. The menu includes corned beef hash, pancakes with syrup, bacon, sweet rolls, fruit cups, and beverages. Prepaid reservations can be made at the center Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $4 per person. The Gala is open to members only.
