Brocton School Board receives reports, acts on personnel items
BROCTON – Reports and resolutions dealing with personnel items were on the agenda of the Brocton School Board at its recent meeting.
Superintendent John Hertlein reported that after the holiday recess, the cafeteria area will be temporarily relocated for the balance of the school year while renovation work is done. He sent letters to the parents and guardians of students to let them know of the changes. In his letter he called the disruption “a temporary inconvenience for a permanent improvement.” He also gave information about the area where lunch will be served and eaten and advised them breakfast and lunch will meet nutritional requirements but menus may be more repetitive.
He also reported that the Annual Professional Review Plan was approved by the State Education Department. Hertlein was a part of the process of crafting the plan. He thanked Jason Delcamp, middle/high school principal; Sandra Olson, elementary principal; Linda Miller, secretary to the superintendent and district clerk; teachers Marie Persch, Robbin Mutch, Carrie McCausland, Michelle Crowell, and Karen MacIntyre; and Michelle Helmer from BOCES. The timely approval of the plan means that state aid will not be cut from the district.
Board President Thomas DeJoe reported that a joint meeting with the Westfield Board of Education is tentatively scheduled for Jan. 16 so the consultant group can update the boards on the consolidation feasibility study. The District Advisory Committee is scheduled to meet after that time. On both schools’ websites the date is still listed as tentative.
Delcamp reported that after the shooting at the Newtown, Conn. school, state troopers have visited the district and reviewed the safety plan. Delcamp said that Brocton had “a good safety plan” but “the discussions have been good.” A meeting of school district personnel in Chautauqua and Erie counties is scheduled for Jan. 3 from 1-3 p.m. One site is Chautauqua Lake School and there will be other distance learning sites, such as the LoGuidice Center in Fredonia.
Board member David Hazelton said that fire departments don’t normally respond to situations like Newtown and thought that the district should sit down with the fire chief or perhaps on a county level with Julius Leone, Chautauqua County Emergency Services Director.
In personnel matters:
The board of education granted Brian Hornbuckle tenure status in the area of K-12 music education effective Jan. 5.
The board approved a tentative two-year contract for Kenneth Roberts, Director of Transportation retroactive to July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2014.
The board approved a tentative two-year contract for Chris Vacanti, Head Mechanic, retroactive to July 1, 2012 retroactive through June 30, 2014.
A tentative contract was approved for Arthur Miller, Head Custodian, retroactive to July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2014.
The Board increased the hourly pay for substitute bus drivers from $10 per hour to $11 per hour effective Jan. 3. Substitute bus aides’ pay will increase from $8 to $8.50 per hour effective Jan 3.
