Degolier, Mignoli lead Billies past Panthers, 63-15
GOWANDA – The Fredonia Hillbillies got strong performances from two of their more underrated wrestlers in defeating Gowanda, 63-15, Friday in CCAA Division 1 high school wrestling.
At 160-pounds, Fredonia’s Damien Degolier pinned Zach Ruberick in 5:24.
“It was an excellent match,” Fredonia assistant coach Ross Conti said. “He did a great job for us and gives 100 percent. That match was the epitomy of what he does. He is a hard, hard worker. This team has some star power and sometimes guys like that get overlooked.”
Meanwhile, at 170, Steve Mignoli decisioned Ryan Dils, 8-5.
“He is a sophomore who has made a lot of headway,” Conti said. “What makes our team click this year is guys like Mignoli and Degolier who are finding their stride. Steve is beating guys he was losing to last year.”
At 182, Fredonia’s Zach Buckley pinned Dalton Mills in 1:06. Nick Nocek followed that up with a 1:19 fall over Vinny Johnson.
At 99, Steve St. George pinned Heron Snow in 1:53. Dakota Gardner also earned a pin for the Hillbillies with a 1:44 fall over Hunter Simons.
For Gowanda, Dave Puff pinned Govanni Ruiz in 1:01 while Dylan Jones pinned John Saeli at 5:37 at 120.
“Gowanda always wrestles hard against us,” Conti said. “When we are in their gym, they wrestle us tough. They always come at you. Even when you win, you come off the mat looking like you got beat up. They battled hard.”
