Fredonia Rotary selects Students of the Month

The Fredonia Rotary Students of the Month are Jeffrey Mulkin and Nicole Szymczak.

Mulkin is the son of Kevin and Beth Mulkin, and the grandson of Max and Marion Bray and James and Beverly Mulkin. He is currently ranked in the top 5 percent of his class and will graduate with an Advanced Regents diploma. Mulkin is currently enrolled in four Advanced Placement classes, including Physics, Calculus, English Literature and Government, in addition to classes that fulfill other graduation requirements. Mulkin has also taken both AP U.S. History and AP Psychology. He has taken advanced classes in both English and Global, as well as accelerated math classes. Mulkin was inducted into the National Honor Society on Nov. 15.

His extracurricular activities include soccer, for which he is co-captain; Student Council his sophomore and junior years, for which he was class advisor and president, respectively; and NCCYMA Steelers ice hockey. He was chosen as a Second-team All-star for soccer as well as being a participant in the 13th annual Chautauqua County Senior All-star game. A four-year member of the orchestra, Mulkin plays the cello. He played in the pit orchestra for the FHS performances of “Godspell” and “Fiddler on the Roof.”

Outside of school, Mulkin works at the Paper Factory in Fredonia. He worked as a Learn to Play Hockey volunteer student coach for several seasons. He was also a participant in the 2011 Health Care Careers Summer Camp at Brooks Memorial Hospital.

After high school, Mulkin plans on attending either Binghamton University or UB for a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, after which he will attend medical school to become a physician.

Szymczak is a senior at Fredonia High School. She is the daughter of Joel and Hannah Szymczak. Szymczak is currently taking three AP courses, which include Calculus, Physics and English. She completed AP U.S. History last year. She has taken accelerated math classes since seventh grade. Szymczak was inducted into Fredonia High School’s National Honor Society on Nov. 15. She has received the Principal’s Award every quarter in high school.

Szymczak has been a member of the volleyball, softball and basketball teams at Fredonia. She has been on the JV and Varsity volleyball team, and played on the modified and JV basketball team. She has played softball since age 5, and was on the Valley League 14U Western New York State Champions team in 2009. She went to New Jersey for the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship. In addition to being a player, Szymczak is also an avid sports fan, attending college football games at Penn State, Notre Dame and Michigan State. She is part of Fredonia’s Chamber Choir and traveled to Boston last year with the chorus.

Szymczak is active in Key Club and was in Medical Explorers last year at Brooks Memorial Hospital. As a member of Key Club, Szymczak sold flowers, trick-or-treated for UNICEF and walked in the Breast Cancer and MS walks to raise funds and promote awareness. She has also volunteered with the Sheridan Fire Department’s Ladies Auxiliary to help with their various activities. As a member of St. Anthony’s Confirmation class, she helped with clothing and food drives and worked the monthly church socials. Szymczak has worked as an umpire for Fredonia Little League and as an office assistant at Lake Shore Orthopedic Group.

She is currently working at Sullivan’s Charbroil and babysits for a family friend. After high school, she hopes to attend UB to study pharmacology or physical therapy.
