Billies run to victory

The Fredonia Hillbillies (7-3, 4-1) used a run-and-gun offense Monday to take care of the Gowanda Panthers (0-4 2-7), 78-41, in CCAA Division 1 boys high school basketball.

The uptempo offense helped the home team jump out to a 23-4 lead after the first quarter and a 42-17 halftime edge.

“We came out really good,” Fredonia coach Greg Lauer said. “We ran the floor really well. Our defense held them in check and that set the tone. We pushed the ball really well up the floor. We are trying not to settle for 3s. We want to attack the basket and we did a nice job of that.”

The Hillbillies outscored the Panthers, 36-24 in the second half to run away with the win.

Dylan Meyer led the way for Fredonia with 20 points while Cam Voss had nine points and 11 rebounds. Trent Thompson also pulled down 11 boards while Nick Johnston had six assists and three steals for the winners.

“The story was getting inside and that’s where we scored most of the points,” Lauer noted. “They couldn’t run the floor well so we beat them down the court quite a bit.”

The Panthers were led by Zach Stevens’ 12 points and 11 rebounds.

The Hillbillies return to action Thursday when they travel to Southwestern.
