Fast start leads Bears past Cougars

FREWSBURG – The Frewsburg Bears (4-6, 1-3) jumped out to a 19-10 lead after the first quarter and never looked back in a 55-36 CCAA Division 2 boys basketball win over the Cassadaga Valley Cougars (5-4, 1-3) on Monday night.

”We played well,” was the way Frewsburg coach Tom Johnson summed up the win. ”We played good defense and we shot well tonight (21 of 46 from the field), good shooting and good defense.”

Josh Nelson led the Bears with had 14 points, six rebounds and four assists. Alex Elderkin added 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Randy Dalaba had 15 points and 12 rebounds for Cassadaga Valley.

Silver Creek 84, Catt. LV 54

SILVER CREEK – Sophomore Bill Brooks’ 20-20 performance paced undefeated Silver Creek (10-0, 5-0) to an 84-54 win over Cattaraugus-Little Valley, Monday in CCAA Division 2 boys basketball.

Brooks netted 21 points and grabbed a career-high 20 rebounds to keep Silver Creek’s record spotless.

Kaine Kettle scored a game-high 25 points with six steals for the Black Knights while Zed Williams dished out 12 assists to go with seven rebounds and eight points.

Colt Agnew led the Timberwolves with 24 points but Catt.-Little Valley was no match for the red-hot Black Knights.

Next up for Silver Creek is a contest with Randolph on Thursday. The game has a little added meaning for the Black Knights.

“They gave us our only loss of the regular season last year,” Silver Creek coach Rob Genco said. “I’m sure they’re looking to do the same thing this time around.”

Division 3

Chautauqua Lake 59, Forestville 50

FORESTVILLE – The Chautauqua Lake Thunderbirds (2-6, 1-2) used a big first half to hold off the Forestville Hornets (3-6, 1-2), 59-50, for their first CCAA Division 3 boys high school basketball victory of the season.

After building a 12-8 first-quarter edge, the visitors bumped the lead, 32-20 by intermission.

The Hornets made a comeback and cut the lead to one point in the second half. However, Carter Davidson hit two big treys in the second half to secure the win for the Thunderbirds.

Ian Clute led Chautauqua Lake with 13 points and 10 rebounds while A.J. Hulton had 11 points and four assists. Cody Thomas had 10 points and six steals for the victors.

The Hornets were led by Alex Pleva’s 18 points and Jacob Nosbisch’s 12 points. Paul Davis, Caleb Makuch and Wayne Hartloff each had eight rebounds in a losing effort.

Division 4

Brocton 52, Clymer 50 OT

CLYMER – In high school basketball, many games are decided at the free throw line.

On Monday, the Brocton Bulldogs (3-1) were 17-for-27 while Clymer (6-3, 2-1)was a dismal 7-for-24.

The end result was a 52-50 overtime victory for the Bulldogs in CCAA Division 4 boys high school basketball.

Fittingly enough, Dan Ferguson won the game for the Bulldogs with two clutch free throws in the final minute to seal the victory.

The Pirates sent the game into overtime as Matt DeStevens drained a 3-pointer with :26 left to tie the game 48-all.

In overtime, Ferguson had all four points for the visitors. He ended with a game-high 24 points while Jordan patterson scored 12 and Anthony Riforgiato added 11. Riforgiato also had 10 rebounds while Ferguson had eight boards.

Dan Lictus led Clymer with 17 points and 10 rebounds while Mitch Einink had 12 points and eight boards in a losing effort.

Ellicottville 63, North Collins 52

NORTH COLLINS – North Collins (6-4, 3-2) couldn’t hang on to a first-quarter lead as the Eagles fell to CCAA Division 4 rival Ellicottville, 63-52, Monday in boys high school basketball.

North Collins led 15-12 after the first eight minutes, but Ellicottville (4-3, 1-2) outscored the Eagles in each of the remaining three quarters to pull away.

Jared Keppel led North Collins with 20 points, but the team’s offense as a whole struggled to get anything going.

Cameron Wilson paced Ellicottville with 23 points.

In an odd statistical note, neither team connected on a three-pointer in the game.

North Collins travels for a tough test with Sherman on Thursday.
