Twenty years ago – 1993

Dunkirk Police are investigating a shot fired through the bedroom window of Dunkirk School Board President Robert Barlette overnight. No one was injured, but Mr. Barlette told the OBSERVER this morning he is convinced the incident is related to his role as the chief school board official and the ongoing friction over several recent school board decisions, including one to fire the district’s superintendent. The shooting incident occurred about 4:40 a.m., right after Barlette turned on the bathroom light.

Thirty years ago – 1983

The Fredonia Board of Education has accepted “with extreme regret” a letter of resignation from Dr. Rocco R. Doino, superintendent of Fredonia schools, who announced his retirement effective Sept. 1. Dr. Doino served the Fredonia Central School for 30 years – his entire educational career – the last 18 of those years as superintendent. He told the board he plans to remain in Fredonia.

Forty years ago – 1973

The White House announced at noon today that Dr. Henry A. Kissinger would meet Hanoi’s Le Duc Tho in Paris on Jan. 23 “for the purpose of completing the text” of a cease-fire agreement aimed at ending the war in Vietnam.

Fifty years ago – 1963

A belated New Year’s present to residents of Dunkirk, Fredonia and all of northern Chautauqua County came today when federal loans totaling $2,158,374 for local purchase of the Alco Products Inc. real estate were approved.
