Bentham leads Pine Valley past Forestville

SOUTH DAYTON – Alex Bentham had a team-high 15 points to go with five steals as Pine Valley (5-6, 3-3) dropped Forestville (6-6, 2-4), 59-46, during CCAA Division 3 girls basketball action, on Friday.

“We started off behind 9-1 and then we just slowly came back,” Pine Valley head coach Tim Nobles said.

Down 17-15 after the first quarter, the Lady Panthers picked up the intensity on defense and went 10-for-11 from the foul line, outscoring the Lady Hornets 24-10 to take a 39-27 lead into the break.

“It was the usual,” Nobles said, referring to the turnovers his girls created on defense. “But we got a lot of penetration on their defense and then we played solid defense the rest of the way. We really played good defense.”

The Lady Panthers led 49-38 after the third quarter, before outscoring the Lady Hornets, 10-8, over the final eight minutes to earn the win.

Kayla Mansfield had 14 points 10 rebounds and five steals in the win while Kaleigh Brunswick chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds. Laurel Killock chipped in nine points and eight rebounds.

For Forestville, Cherish Pope had a game-high 17 points, Sydney Youngberg added 12 points, and Alisha Szumigala chipped in 11 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Maple Grove 40, Westfield 11

BEMUS POINT – Everything went Maple Grove’s way Friday as the Lady Red Dragons improved to 5-1 in Division 3 and 7-4 overall with a 40-11 rout of Westfield (0-6, 4-8).

Leading the way for Maple Grove were Lauren Nickerson and Mikayla Swanson with nine points each, Emily Swanson had eight points and six rebounds and Nickara Liddell pulled in five rebounds.

Emma Fermier had eight rebounds for the Lady Wolverines.
