Quick start leads Billies past Falconer
The Fredonia Hillbillies (9-3, 6-1) rolled to a 70-46 victory over the Falconer Golden Falcons (2-11, 1-6) in CCAA Division 1 boys basketball behind the performances of Dylan Meyer and John Piper as the pair combined for 51 points in the win.
Before Falconer was able to get on the scoreboard, it had already spotted the Hillbillies an 11-point lead.
Fredonia’s hot start was largely due to a relentless pressure from its defense.
“It was nice to see us come out strong,” Fredonia coach Greg Lauer said. “Our defense came out tough. We were able to force some turnovers and turn them into layups going the other way.”
Through eight minutes, the home team took an 18-9 advantage with nine first-quarter points from Meyer and seven from Piper.
Fredonia’s momentum continued in the second quarter as it outscored Falconer 14-9.
“Our offense struggled early,” Falconer coach Tim Anderson said. “This team is willing to work. The record may not show it, but they are definitely working hard and getting better.”
The Golden Falcons struggled to find rhythm offensively throughout the first half, as they managed just 18 points by halftime.
However, after Falconer regrouped at halftime it came out with a much improved offensive attack in the third quarter.
Falconer outscored the Hillbillies 20-19 in the third quarter with Mike Wilcox getting the team started as he scored eight points in the first three minutes of the third quarter.
“We started doing what I was asking all game,” Anderson said. “We started playing better man-to-man defense, and on offense, did a better job kicking the ball out to the wings in transition and finding the shots inside when we could.”
The Golden Falcons cut Fredonia’s lead to 41-33 midway through the third quarter.
However, Fredonia came back strong to outscore Falconer 19-8 in the fourth quarter.
“We didn’t really shoot well in the first half,” Lauer said. “As the game went on, we did a better job of taking some better shots and they started falling.”
Meyer led all scorers with 28 points while Piper was a close second with 23. Nick Johnston also had a nice night for the Hillbillies as he chipped in with five points, 10 assists and eight boards.
Leading the way for Falconer was Nick Conti with 11 points while Mike Wilcox had 10 to go with five rebounds and three assists.
“Mike Wilcox had a nice night even though he was fighting through a bad ankle all night,” Anderson said. “Conti also has some back issues so we are playing injured. We don’t have a very big bench, so I think we just kind of got worn out towards the end.”
