Twenty years ago — 1993
Two WNY Merchant Marine veterans were recently honored for their efforts during the Murmansk Run in World War II, delivering supplies to the Russian Front. More than 40 years after the war, Gowanda resident Joseph DeCarlo and Richard Stefanik Sr. of Leon were among 200 members of the U.S Merchant Marines who were recognized Dec. 8 at the Russian Embassy in Washington, D.C. They received “40th Anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War” medals.
Thirty years ago – 1983
Dunkirk’s Lake Shore Savings and Loan Association was recently selected as one of America’s top “high performance thrift institutions” by National Thrift News. The bank was one of only seven such institutions in New York State to receive the distinction. Lake Shore Savings is the only independent community financial institution in Chautauqua County. It was organized in 1891.

Dr. Henry Youngerman, professor of speech pathology and audiology at Fredonia State University College, has been elected a Fellow in the American Speech and Hearing Association.
Fifty years ago – 1963
Van Miller, WBEN radio and television personality and “The Voice of the Buffalo Bills,” will speak at the annual Dunkirk-Fredonia Junior Chamber of Commerce Bosses Night dinner at Rusch’s Restaurant in Dunkirk.
