Fredonia wins Catt-LV tournament

CATTARAUGUS – Fredonia had six champions Saturday at the Cattaraugus-Little Valley Invitational, as Pat McCarthy (113 pounds), Dakota Gardner (126), Tyler Cassidy (132), Jude Gardner (152), Zach Buckley (170) and Chris Saden (220) all took home titles, helping the Hillbillies finish atop the 14-team standings.
“All our guys had at least two tough matches, except Christian Saden,” Fredonia head coach Alex Conti said. “They got tested. They got pushed and they snuck out some tight wins. I was very pleased with the overall competition and how the guys responded to it.”
Saden, who won the Aggregate Pin Award for collecting four pins in a combined 78 seconds, finished 5-0 on the day while Pat McCarthy finished 5-0, including three pins.
“Some weight classes were extremely good,” Conti said. “I was very happy that Pat (McCarthy) had solid competition. Both the semifinal and final matches were against quality opponents and that was real important.”
McCarthy defeated Portville’s Bryan Theirman, 12-6, in the semis and Olean’s Drew Marra, 6-2, in the finals.
Dakota Gardner and big brother Jude Gardner combined to go 9-0, as Dakota defeated Attica’s Troy Pettygrew, 14-1, in his finals match and Jude beat Randolph’s Chris Doubek, 5-3, in overtime.
Cassidy finished 4-0 with three pins to win his title, pinning Allegany-Limestone’s Jordan Kayes in 1:29 in the finals. Zach Buckley beat Randolph’s Jimmy Carr, 12-3, at 170.
Julius Woma (132), Jovany Ruiz (99), Damian Degoiler (145) and Nick Nocek (182) all took third, with Woma, Degolier and Nocek all finishing 4-1. Ruiz ended his day 3-2 while Steve Mignoli took fourth at 160 with a 3-2 mark.
For the season, Buckley (35-0, 25 pins), Dakota Gardner (36-0) and Saden (27-0, 25 pins) all remained undefeated while McCarthy moved to 32-1, Jude Gardner 37-1 and Cassidy 33-4.
Meanwhile, Dunkirk’s Tito Colom (106) and Hector Colom (99) both came away with titles, helping the Marauders finish fourth. Teammate Nick Jones was second at 220.
Lucas McKeever finished first for Gowanda at 138, Cody Richter was second at 145 for the Panthers, who finished sixth.
Matt Booth was first at 195 for CLVPV while teammate Alex Kelly was third at 160, as their squad finished ninth on the day.
