Clayton “Herky” Smith, 73, of Ellenton, Florida passed away peacefully in his sleep, Dec. 26, 2012. Born in Lamberton, NY to George and Gertrude Smith, he was employed first at A.J. Wahls in Brocton, NY and later at Welch’s in Westfield, NY following graduation from Brocton Central School. Clayton was a member of
the Fredonia United Methodist Church, where he met his wife of 53 years, Sylvia Smith. He placed much importance on education as evidenced by his having
served on the Brocton Central School Board for 15 years and also on the Chautauqua County School Board. In 1995, Clayton retired from Welch’s and moved to
Ellenton, Florida. At the time of his passing, he was a member of the Manatee United Methodist Church, where he served on the school’s pre-school board.
Clayton was predeceased by his brother, Roger Smith, and is survived by his wife, Sylvia; daughter Kelly (and Mark) Riforgiat of Bradenton, Florida; son
Michael (and Aimee) Smith of Parish, Florida; daughter Susan (and Fritz) Boettcher of Dunkirk, NY; a brother, Wesley Smith of Michigan; a sister, Marilyn Tastor
of New York; and seven grandchildren, Wilson and Wesley Riforgiat, Brigitte and Marissa Boettcher, and Hunter, Jacob and Abrielle Smith. He was loved by all and
will be dearly missed.
