Twenty years ago – 1993
A “Do You Remember?” photo remembers when gas was cheap. A Dunkirk Kiwanis fundraiser took place in 1958 at the Atlantic gas station at West Fifth Street and Central Avenue in Dunkirk. Although gas was 28.9 cents a gallon, this project raised several hundred dollars. Participants in this all-out effort were Joe Gullo Norm Rafan, co-chairmen; Fredonia Mayor Russell Joy; and Dunkirk Mayor George Wheeler.
Thirty years ago – 1983
Together for 35 years, members of the Grapevine Pinochle Club held an anniversary dinner at the Vineyard Restaurant in Dunkirk, followed by cards and dessert at the Nevins Street home of Martha Gaura. The group was organized by Veronica Zielinski and Marjorie McCaig-Zbock “while pushing baby buggies one afternoon in 1948.” Other members of the club are Margaret Dimmer, Frances Gostomski, Adele Kuzara, Loretta Levandoski, Mary M. McGan and Jean Zielinski.
Forty years ago – 1973
A “Do You Remember?” photo shows Wuerstle’s Cafe in Dunkirk around 1940 with owners Mr. and Mrs. Michael Wuerstle and their son, Bill. Leo J. “Shovels” Olszowa submitted the picture of this popular Main Street tavern.
Fifty years ago – 1963
The Robert Mascaro family, 27 Bank St., Westfield is sharing its home with Gabriela “Gaby” Morante of Lima, Peru. Sponsored by International Fellowship Inc., Miss Morante has never seen snow.
