Jeanne Evans Steger

Jeanne Evans Steger, age 82, of Fredonia, NY, died Wednesday, January 30, 2013 in Brooks Memorial Hospital.

She was born in Buffalo on June 16, 1930 to the late Philip Evans and Marion Graves Evans.

Jeanne came to Dunkirk as an adolescent, attended Dunkirk Schools and graduated from Dunkirk High School in 1948. On July 1, 1950 she married her husband, Bruce P. Steger. They were married 61 years at the time of his death on May 16, 2012.

Jeanne, who considered herself a homemaker, had many interests. She en-joyed playing pinochle with her friends, doing cross-word puzzles and baking delicious goodies. Jeanne enjoyed reading mystery books and searching for the perfect book at the Barker Library. She was an avid exerciser, having been active in numerous exercise classes in the area for many years. She was a 20+ year volunteer with Meals on Wheels.

She was very fond of dogs and especially enjoyed being involved with the Sirius Dog Training organization operated by her good friend, LeeAnn Cogdill. For many years Jeanne assisted LeeAnn and others with presenting the dogs as entertainment at local nursing homes and presenting the annual pet show at the Fredonia Farm Festival.

Jeanne is survived by her son: Jeffrey (Trudy) Steger, of Forestville, NY; her daughter: Betsy (Thomas) White, also of Forestville, NY; daughter-in-law: Sherry Steger of Fredonia, NY; two grandchildren: Christina (Nick) Ames of Raleigh, NC and Joseph (Alissa) Steger of Novato, CA., and her brother Peter (Marilynn) Evans of Dunkirk, NY. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents and her husband, Jeanne was predeceased by her son, Mark Steger.

Family and friends may call Friday, 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. at the LARSON-TIMKO Funeral Home, 20 Central Avenue, Fredonia, NY. Funeral services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Fredonia, 219 Central Ave., Fredonia, NY, Saturday morning at 10 am. Interment will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery.
