Westfield man jailed after hitting parked cars, house
WESTFIELD – A Westfield man is in Chautauqua County Jail after police said he drunkenly hit multiple cars, one of which hit a house, before fleeing the scene.
Numerous charges have been lodged against Howard F. Nichols, including driving while intoxicated and fleeing the scene of a property-damage accident. The incident occurred Tuesday on Clinton Street in the village.
Police around 7 p.m. received a report of a property-damage accident. While en route, officers were advised that multiple cars and a house were struck by a vehicle. The driver was observed fleeing the scene on foot.
After catching up with him, officers noticed Nichols, 40, of Cass Street, had multiple lacerations on his head from the accident.
“He hit one vehicle which in turn hit another vehicle,” said Robert Genthner, Westfield police chief. “The first car he hit also hit the house.”
Genthner could not provide an estimate on the amount of damage caused by the accident.
Nichols was charged with DWI, obstruction of governmental administration, unlawful possession of marijuana, failure to maintain lane, not wearing a seatbelt, leaving the scene of a property-damage accident and not using head lights at night.
Nichols was arraigned in Westfield Village Court and bail was set. He was remanded to the County Jail and will appear back in court at a later date. Police said additional charges are pending following further investigation.
