Dunkirk rebounds from tough loss, drops Falconer, 70-58
FALCONER-The Dunkirk Marauders (12-5, 5-7) rebounded from Tuesday night’s defeat against Olean with a 70-58 victory over the Falconer Golden Falcons (3-10, 2-7) Wednesday in CCAA Division 1 boys high school basketball action. The game was originally scheduled to be played Feb. 1, but weather forced a postponement.
“We were able to get out and we were able to control the tempo of the game,” Dunkirk coach Jerome Moss said regarding the victory. “We were able to play really good defense tonight. We had a good transition going.”
The Marauders opened up a 29-21 halftime advantage that they held throughout the second half, led by Jacob Lockett’s 21 points and 13 rebounds. Alex Crossan added 19 points, six rebounds and three assists while Marquel Ruiz scored 11 points and eight assists. Manny Maisonet led Dunkirk with six steals alongside two points.
Mitch Carter led the Golden Falcons in defeat with 17 points and two 3-pointers while Mike Wilcox added 11 points.
Dunkirk returns to action next Wednesday against Allegany-Limestone.
ECIC Division 3
Lake Shore 54, Springville 51
SPRINGVILLE – The Lake Shore Eagles (6-8, 5-7) held off a Springville-Griffith Griffins’ (2-12, 0-10) attack through the second and third quarters to secure a 54-51 victory in ECIC Division 3 boys high school basketball action Tuesday.
The Eagles outscored the Griffins, 20-8, in the opening quarter. However, Springville outscored Lake Shore by 14 (37-23) over the game’s next 16 minutes, keyed by four 3-pointers in the third quarter.
“We just kind of thought they were going to go into the locker room and go away (after the first quarter),” Lake Shore coach Dan Gerken said. “(Springville) came out on fire in the second half … It was senior night for Springville, and they were excited and fired up.”
Lake Shore battled back to outpace Springville in the final stanza, 11-6.
“We switched our ‘D’ and locked them down,” Gerken said.
Clark Brueckl led the Eagles with 13 points, while Ryan Joslyn added seven points, seven rebounds and four steals.
Greg Beatty paced the Griffins in a losing effort with 14 points on four 3-pointers, while Billy Dickinson added 13 points on three shots from beyond the arc.
Lake Shore returns to action Friday night against Depew.
CCAA Division 3
Pine Valley 52, Panama 39
SOUTH DAYTON – The Pine Valley Panthers’ offense struggled early, but their defense never wavered in posting a 52-39 Division 3 boys basketball victory over Panama.
Trailing Panama, 8-3, after the first quarter, Pine Valley (5-10, 3-6) rebounded nicely after that, thanks in large measure to the performance of Dylan Granger. Playing in his first varsity game, Granger scored 16 points to go along with six rebounds and four assists. Lucas Trombley added nine rebounds and four assists and Jake Wilcox grabbed nine boards.
Dan Odell led Panama with 14 points.
