Second half leads Salamanca to 44-29 win

SINCLAIRVILLE – Salamanca sank Cassadaga Valley in Division 2 girls basketball on Thursday night.

After outscoring the Lady Warriors, 10-9 in the opening frame, Cassadaga Valley was held to single digits the rest of the way, allowing Salamanca to secure the 44-29 CCAA?Division 2 girls high school basketball victory.

“We had a good first quarter and then just kind of fell apart,” Cassadaga Valley coach Mark Petersen said. “Then we had trouble hitting our shots and couldn’t get the rebound.”

After trailing by just five, 22-17, at the break, Salamanca (10-6, 6-5) netted 11 points and held the Lady Cougars to four for a 33-21 lead with just eight minutes remaining.

Shae Smith led the victors with 20 points and six boards while teammate Alyssa Coustenis followed with 18 points.

For Cassadaga Valley, Heather Ames had a team high six rebounds and

Ashley Carroll and Kristi Zink had nine points apiece.

CCAA?Division 3

Pine Valley 64, Westfield 25

WESTFIELD – The Pine Valley Lady Panthers (7-3, 9-6) downed the Westfield Lady Wolverines (0-9, 4-11), 64-25, Thursday in CCAA Division 3 girls high school basketball action.

Pine Valley scored 22 points in the first quarter en route to a 39-11 halftime lead and never looked back, holding Westfield without a quarter of 10 points or more.

“They shot the lights out early, ” Westfield coach Rich Morrison said. “I thought we played pretty good defense, actually. They were very good. They beat us worse the first time, but they shot better by far this time.”

Laurel Killock led the Lady Panthers with 15 points and nine rebounds while Kaylee Brunswick scored nine points on a trio of 3-pointers along with three steals. Kayla Mansfield added 11 points and seven rebounds in the victory.

For the Lady Wolverines, Emily Archer and Nina Manzella led the team with six points in a losing effort. Archer, Abigail Jopek and Hannah Truitt (four points) added five rebounds each.

Westfield hosts Forestville tonight.

CCAA?Division 4

West Valley 41, Brocton 24

BROCTON – Hindered by foul trouble and turnovers, the Brocton Lady Bulldogs (2-8, 3-10) suffered a 41-24 defeat against the West Valley Lady Wildcats (6-5, 9-8) in CCAA Division 4 girls high school basketball action Thursday.

Brocton held a 7-5 advantage after one quarter of play, but the Lady Bulldogs’ bench saw plenty of action early.

“There were a lot of fouls, a lot of whistles,” Brocton coach Ken Purcell said. “I had three starters on the bench with three fouls and that was early in the second quarter.”

The Lady Wildcats outscored the home team 29-5 through the second and third quarters, putting the game out of reach.

“We had a lot of turnovers,” Purcell said. “West Valley did a good job in the first half with second chances and offensive rebounds.”

Megan Bailey paced West Valley with 12 points while Kristin Snayczuk added eight points.

Morgan Bennett led Brocton with five points and 10 rebounds while Brooke Kuschel contributed five points and eight rebounds. Jessica Putcher added eight points in a losing effort.

The Lady Bulldogs return to action at home in a make-up game against North Collins tonight.
