Total team effort

JAMESTOWN – The Fredonia Lady Hillbillies (5-6, 6-10) received an all-around team effort Thursday night in defeating the Southwestern Lady Trojans, 43-40, in CCAA Division 1 girls high school basketball.

Nine different players scored for the Lady Hillbillies and signs of improvement have been evident to coach Carol Zirkle.

“The first time we played them, we struggled and were down 20-5 after the first quarter,” she said. “We knew the first quarter was important. We were able to execute and handle their press much better. Our defense was significantly better. The first time was a wake-up call and we were able to play basic defense. That was key. We were able to hold them in the first quarter. I have seen so much improvement with this team from last season to the beginning of this season to now and that’s very rewarding for a coach. To see the players show that much improvement and be able to execute effectively is great to see.”

Thursday’s first quarter was a much different story for Fredonia as it jumped out to a 14-7 lead and held a 21-18 edge at halftime.

Morgan Genovese led the Lady Hillbillies with 14 points while Sarah Cruver and Maddie Crandall each had six points. Kirsta Wheelock and Alicia Deering each scored four points. Baylee Tarnowski added three points while Frankie Sysol, Bre Dahn and Emily Valvo each had a pair.

“It was very balanced scoring,” Zirkle said. “Nine players scored and different players stepped up at different times. Deering came in the first quarter and scored four quick points. Tarnowski hit a big bucket. Cruver had four points in the fourth, as did Crandall. Wheelock hit two big shots. Sysol hit a big basket. Different players were able to contribute at key times.”

Cruver also had eight rebounds while Genovese had six steals. Wheelock added five boards and Crandall had five rebounds and three steals.

Fredonia returns to action Tuesday when it travels to Immaculata.
