MAYVILLE – Cody Thomas had a game-high 14 points as three Chautauqua Lake (8-8, 6-4) players scored in double-digits, helping the Thunderbirds ease past Franklinville, 52-37, during CCAA Division 3 boys basketball action Saturday.
“We had good scoring balance with three in double figures and one with nine,” Chautauqua Lake head coach Chris Dole said. “We also forced Franklinville into 21 turnovers using a combination of press looks.”
Ian Clute had 11 points, a team-high 12 rebounds, three blocks and three steals while A.J. Hulton chipped in 11 points.
Chautauqua Lake led 11-5 after the first quarter, before Franklinville came back in the second, outscoring the Thunderbirds, 10-7, cutting the lead to three, 18-15.
In the second half, Chautauqua Lake outscored Franklinville, 14-8 in the third quarter and 20-14 over the final eight minutes for the 52-37 win.
A big surprise for Dole’s Thunderbirds was the play of David Applegarth, who finished with nine points on the day, grabbing seven rebounds, dishing out four assists and blocking two shots.
“(Saturday), David Appelgarth made his presence known in the post,” Dole said. “He was a difference maker and created a defensive problem for Franklinville.”
