Robert Henry Meeder
RIPLEY – Robert Henry Meeder, 83, of 10492 W. Side Hill road, Ripley, New York passed away on Sunday, February 10, 2013 at Hamot Medical Center sur-rounded by his family. He had been in failing health recently.
Bob was a 1947 graduate of Sherman Central School and was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He witnessed the world’s first thermonuclear explosion as part of Operation Ivy over Eniwetok Atoll in the Marshall Islands in 1952. One of Bob’s great pleasures was square dancing, and this is how he met his future wife Vida Marcella Urso, who he married on Oct. 9, 1955. He retired from the Electric Materials Company after more than 38 years of service in 1986. A man of great faith, he was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Ripley, serving as a trustee until his death.
Born in Ripley, New York, March 21, 1929, a son of Mervin and Clarice (Hewitt) Meeder, he is survived by his five children, Deanne (Bobbie) Vaughn of Westfield, NY, Loren (Marydawn) Meeder of North East, Pennsylvania, Lynette West of Portland, New York, Katrina (Robin) Turner of Cary, North Carolina and Eric (Pamela) Meeder of Roswell, Georgia. Also surviving is a sister, Mary (Allan) DeGray of Baltimore, Maryland, fourteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and beloved wife Vida, he was preceded in death by a sister Lois Biekert and two brothers, John and Hewitt.
The family will receive friends at the Mathews Funeral Home, 104 W. Main Street, Ripley, New York on Thursday, Feb. 14 from 5 to 7 p.m. and on Friday, Feb. 15 from 5 to 7 p.m.
A memorial service will be held at the Ripley Baptist Church, Ripley, New York at 2 p.m. Feb. 16, with the Rev. Don Eggleston officiating.
