Porterfield set for Sectional championships

For the fourth straight year, Fredonia’s Reed Porterfield will be competing in the Section 6 swimming championships at Clarence High School today, as he looks to punch a ticket into the state meet.

The two-day event begins today as warmups are set for 4 p.m. and swimming to being at 5 p.m. On Saturday, warmups will begin at 11 a.m. and finals are set for noon.

Porterfield is seeded fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke and ninth in the 200 individual medley.

Last year, Porterfield finished 15th in the breaststroke.

“He got personal best last week in the event with a 1:03.34,” Fredonia coach Bob Ball noted. “The biggest thing is we want to continue to bring that time down which is tough to do and he wants to make the state meet.”

In order to qualify for the state meet, Porterfield must finish with a time of 1:01.2.

“Last week he wasn’t really pushed,” Ball said. “He is seeded fourth (today). He will be in a heat with stiffer competition so we are hoping that will help bring his time down again.”

Twenty four swimmers will compete in each event today and then the top 16 return Saturday.

“Some of these kids he has raced against in private meets before,” Ball said. “Reed’s confidence level is up. His times are good and he is looking forward to seeing how fast of a time he can turn in. Like we said (Thursday), we aren’t going to wait for the second day to get a fast time. We are going right after it (tonight). We are going for our fastest time (tonight).”
