Police officer discusses career with Advantage Program students

WESTFIELD – The YWCA Westfield announces the following programs and upcoming events:

Advantage Program

Officer William Cummings from the Westfield Police Department recently spoke to the YWCA’s Westfield middle and high school Advantage Program students about police work as a career choice and to the elementary students about car safety. He addressed the many changes in laws regarding the use of car seats, booster seats and explained when it is safe to ride in the front seat. Parents were encouraged to attend as well so they are up to date with current New York State law.

Everyone enjoyed the visit and the kids asked some great questions about what they should do if they do not fit in their seat belt properly, and what they should do if they are in a car that has been pulled over by the police for a traffic violation. Officer Cummings swore in the students as sheriffs, deputized them with a Junior Sheriff badge and passed around his handcuffs for everyone to try out.

Self-defense for women

On Thursday, Feb. 28 from 5:30 to 7 p.m., the YWCA Westfield will host a free informational class on self-defense for women. Instructor Albert Ramirez will be leading the class. Ramirez has over 30 years experience teaching self-defense and other martial arts classes. Depending on interest and participation, ongoing instruction classes will be scheduled at the YWCA. There is no fee or cost for the initial class, but space is limited so reservations are requested. Call the YWCA at 326-2011 to make your reservation.

Spring break

During the school spring break from Monday, Feb. 18 to Friday, Feb. 22, the YWCA will be offering child care. Prior registration is required. Call the child services office at 326-4012 for more details.

During spring break, the YWCA gym will have limited availability for drop in privileges. Middle and high school students are welcome to use the gym once they have completed membership paperwork and have parents sign off. The schedule for the gym has been posted or students can call the Y at 326-2011 to inquire about hours.
