Gowanda hears how Cattaraugus County can help

GOWANDA – The Department of Economic Development, Planning and Tourism for Cattaraugus County is looking to help municipalities in Cattaraugus County, including Gowanda.

Director of Cattaraugus County Economic Development, Planning and Tourism Director Crystal Abers addressed the Gowanda Village Board. Abers spoke on how the county can help the village with development opportunities. All the different economic development agencies within the county meet biweekly to promote local development.

“In the past when someone would come to us interested in development, … we would send them to the next person and they would send them to the next,” Abers said. “Instead of that individual having to make three or four stops to get what they need, they come one time to us; we work together to come up with a package and present that to them.”

Abers said that if the village has properties available for development, a form is filled out and filed with the county. Buffalo Niagara Enterprise and the county Industrial Development Agency are both organizations that work with Abers’ office. If either organization wants land to develop, they will go through Abers and she will connect them with municipalities based on the forms filed with the county.

She also spoke of the county hazard mitigation plan. According to Abers, the village participated in the past and there is no cost to the village to be a part of. The hazard mitigation plan has to be applied for every five years.

“You have to submit it every five years and that’s so you’re eligible for hazard mitigation dollars,” she said.

The village also reminded residents to place garbage stickers on bags before being placed out to the curb and sent a letter of support for the flood risk feasibility study. The Department of Environmental Conservation is the non-federal sponsor.
