Naim A. Sefein

Naim A. Sefein, 85, The Villages, Florida died February 15, 2013 while traveling in Aruba.

He is survived by his loving wife Mary (Astry), his beloved children, Mark Sefein of Dallas, Texas and Nadia Sefein and her husband Stephen Goeller of Rochester, New York along with stepsons Daniel Astry of Fredonia, New York and Calvin and Douglas Astry of Eden Prairie, MN. Naim is also survived by many siblings in Egypt, nieces and nephews across the country and many treasured friends and colleagues. He is predeceased by his precious son David and cherished wife Janet.

After receiving both a Bachelor of Science from the University of Cairo and a Bachelor of Arts from the American University at Cairo, Naim left his native Egypt and came to the United States on a Fulbright Scholarship and received his Masters in Education and his PhD in Educational Psychology from the University of Minnesota. After teaching in Minnesota and Wisconsin, Naim settled in Fredonia, New York where he taught at State University of New York at Fredonia for the majority of his career. A nomad at heart, he also spent many sabbatical years teaching for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Doha, Qatar, Saana, Yemen and Saudi Arabia. His passion for learning and travel contin-ued throughout his life and lead him around the world to places like India, Thailand, Russia, Australia, Brazil, China and Vietnam along with the Middle East and Europe. Perhaps the only thing he loved more than travel was his family and friends, whom he treasured with all of his heart.

A memorial celebration of his life will be announced at a later time. As a tribute to Naim, do a random act of kindness for someone today.
