Lancaster leads CVCS into prequarterfinals
BUFFALO – No. 10 Cassadaga Valley (9-10) held No. 7 Maritime (8-11) to just two points over the game’s final eight minutes en route to a 51-43 win in Section 6 Class C-1 boys basketball pre-quarterfinal action on Wednesday, at St. Mary’s School for the Deaf.
“We don’t score a lot of points,” Cassadaga Valley head coach Rich Clifford said. “We have to keep teams down in order for us to win.”
Mike Lancaster had a game-high 17 points to lead the Cougars into a quarterfinal matchup Friday night against No. 2 Oracle Charter (17-1), the State’s No. 10 Class C school.
“He had a great game,” Clifford said of Lancaster, who finished with eight rebounds. “He came out and hit two (3-pointers) and played great defense.
“Nobody will give us a chance to come within 30 or 40 (of Oracle Charter),” Clifford continued. “But hopefully we can surprise some people.”
Cassadaga Valley jumped out to a 17-12 lead after the first quarter, taking a 30-24 lead into halftime. Then, in the third quarter, Maritime made a run, taking a 41-40 lead into the fourth quarter. But it was all Cougars from there, as they outscored the Commodores, 11-2.
“I’m really proud of my kids and how they played,” Clifford noted.
Tim Bender (five assists, four steals) and Randy Dalaba (10 rebounds) scored 10 points each in the win.
For Maritime, Brandon Cruz had a team-high 12 points while Tyree Coble chipped in 11 points and Larry Ingram seven.
The Cougars game with Oracle Charter will be played at St. Mary’s School for the Deaf, and is set for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
