Twenty years ago — 1993

Student of the Week is Richard Darren Mangine, a senior at Cassadaga Valley Central School. The son of Richard and Nancy Mangine of Route 60, Cassadaga he participates in soccer and basketball and was named 3-time MVP of the school’s golf team. Richard is vice president of his class and a three-year member of Student Council. In the fall, he plans to attend either SUNY Geneseo or SUNY Fredonia to pursue a degree in secondary education with a specialization in biology.

Thirty years ago – 1983

An OBSERVER photographer snapped Charles Kelley of Thayer Hill Road, Portland as he was busy trimming grape vines on the Irving Powell farm in the town of Portland. The farm on Church Street and Thayer Hill Road has 112 acres of grapes.

Forty years ago – 1973

The Carl Vincent Club, originally known as the Sigma Phi Delta Fraternity, celebrated its 35th anniversary with a party at the White Inn, Fredonia. Joseph R. Privitera was banquet chairman.

Fifty years ago – 1963

Louis Unmack, age 80, was the caller and gave the first lesson on square dancing at the recent meeting of Dunkirk senior citizens.
