Starks seeks Fredonia trustee position

Lifelong Fredonia resident Mary Jane Starks announced she is seeking a four year term on the Fredonia Village Board.

“The generations that came before me worked hard to ensure and maintain the quality of life we enjoy here in the village today. I feel that perhaps as the next generation I can bring a new perspective to the table on ways to work for the betterment of our community and its members and for the generations to come after me,” Starks said.

A graduate of Fredonia High School, Jamestown Community College, Jamestown Business College and SUNY Fredonia, her only time away from Fredonia was a brief time after she married her husband Russell Starks when they lived in East Otto. Starks graduated from SUNY Fredonia in 2009 with a bachelor of arts in sociology and a minor in psychology.

She has worked as a Summer Youth Program Coordinator for both the town of Pomfret and the town of Sheridan for three summers. She has worked for various organizations as a bookkeeper/accountant as well as in property management.

Starks is endorsed by the Fredonia Republican Party and the Independent Concord Party.

She is the daughter of Rosemary Z. Mancuso and the Louis C. Mancuso, former mayor of the village of Fredonia.

“Growing up I was taught the importance of truth, honor and integrity and believe those are qualities that I possess and can use while serving this community. My father often told me that serving his community in public office was an honor and required dedication, commitment and long hours all of which I saw firsthand during his years of service,” Starks continued. “I too am prepared to do the same for the village if given the chance. I am passionate about our community and the challenges facing all of us in these tough economic times. If elected I plan to work hard and explore all avenues possible to make the village of Fredonia a thriving community that we all can be proud of, one that people want to actively be a part of and a place in which future generations want to live.”

Starks is an active community volunteer. She is currently the treasurer of Festivals Fredonia. A member of the Festivals Fredonia since 2004, she has served as committee chair and executive board member before taking on treasurer duties in 2010.

She is also a member of the Tau Sigma National Honor Society, Alpha Kappa Delta National Sociological Honor Society and Psi Chi National Psychological Honor Society.

Starks and her husband reside in Fredonia with their 2-year-old daughter Sophia. She is a member of St. Anthony’s R.C. Church in Fredonia.
