Robert Neil Salhoff

Robert Neil Salhoff, age 65, the longtime owner of Neil’s Flower Shop in Fredonia, died Thursday February 21, 2013 in Brooks Memorial Hospital

in Dunkirk. Neil was born in Dunkirk on August 12, 1947 to the late Robert and Pauline Franklin Salhoff. A Fredonia native and resident, he attended Fredonia schools and graduated from Fredonia High School Class of 1965. He graduated from Farmingdale University Class of 1967, with a degree in ornamental horticulture. After college, Neil entered the U.S. Army where he served two tours in Viet Nam. He served with the Americal Division at

Chu-Lai. He was a recipient of two bronze stars for his military service. After his Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Army, Neil returned to Fredonia and began his career as a florist. His first job was with Girton’s Flower Shop in Jamestown, N.Y. On October 9, 1970 Neil opened Neil’s Flower Shop on W. Main Street in Fredonia, where it remained as a main stay of the downtown Fredonia business district for 39 years until Neil retired in 2009. Neil was a Master Florist for F.T.D., and also belonged to the Tela-Flora flower network. Neil enjoyed working with stain glass and boating on Chautauqua Lake. He was a show dog enthusiast. He and his wife Carol owned several Pekingese show dogs through the years, and Neil would enter

and show the dogs at various dog shows. He was a former member of the Fredonia Chamber Commerce where he served as secretary and on the

Board of Directors. Neil also served as treasurer of the Fredonia Farm Festival Committee and was a member of the Fredonia Memorial American Legion Post # 59. Neil is survived by his wife of 37 years, Carol Anderson Salhoff; an aunt, Betty (Charles) Salhoff of California; 2 nieces, Becky

(Joseph) Fries of Palmyra, N.J. and Robbie (Michael) Iannacone of Riverton, N.J., and a cousin, Nancy (Robert) Metzgar of Palm Harbor, Florida. He is also survived by great nieces and great nephews. Friends and family may call Tuesday 2 to 3 pm at the Larson-Timko Funeral Home, 20 Central Avenue, Fredonia, where a Memorial Service will follow at 3pm, with Rev. Helen Sam officiating. Military Honors will follow the service.
