YWCA Westfield plans plethora of upcoming events

WESTFIELD – This past week, area children took advantage of the piles of snow at the YWCA Westfield, visited the library, played in the YWCA gym and enjoyed board games and puzzles. In addition to the before and after school services offered at Westfield Academy and Central School, YWCA staff offers childcare services for students age 5 to 12 during school breaks and throughout the summer at the Y building. For more information, contact Child Care Services Director Brenda Backus at 326-4012.

The YWCA is planning several other events and programs:

Free self defense class

Space is still available for the free self-defense class scheduled for Thursday at 5:30 p.m., at the YWCA. The class is open to all women and girls over the age of 14. Instructor Albert Rameriz will lead the class and talk about awareness and demonstrate effective self-defense techniques. Based on interest, future classes will be scheduled. There is no fee for the initial class. Space is limited, so reservations are appreciated, but walk ins will be accommodated. Contact the YWCA at 326-2011 for more details.

Spaghetti dinner

Pre-sale tickets for the annual spaghetti dinner, set for Monday, March 18, are now available. The tickets can be purchased at the YWCA office or from students enrolled in any of the YWCA childcare programs. The dinner features pasta, sauce and meatballs as well as bread, salad, homemade desserts and a beverage. Prices are $7 for adults, $6 for seniors and $5 for children 10 and under. In addition to dinner, there will be a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction. Proceeds are used for supplies, field trips and other costs associated with the childcare programs.

Arts and crafts

Planning continues for the annual YWCA Arts and Crafts Festival in Moore Park. This year’s’ show is scheduled for Friday, July 26 and Saturday, July 27.

“There are a good number of artists already registered, but we have room for more,” event organizer and agency executive director Katie Smith said. “We count on the returning favorites, but we always look forward to seeing new and interesting artists. Entertainment was a big hit last year, so that will be in place again, and we’ll be publishing the program also. We are always interested in talking with new artists, musicians and entertainers, volunteers and sponsors.”
