8th annual charity basketball game to be held in Dunkirk
The Dunkirk Dunks for Donations committee from the Dunkirk City School District announced they will hold their 8th Annual Charity Basketball Game on March 1 in the newly renovated Dunkirk High School gymnasium.
Several faculty members will once again participate, however there will be a different feel with this year’s game. Instead of the middle school faculty challenging the high school/elementary school faculty, teams will be drafted live the night of the game. Select members of the boys’ varsity basketball team will captain one team while select members of the girls’ varsity basketball team will captain the other team.
The evening of the game will once again feature a children’s carnival from 4 to 6 p.m. in the high school auxiliary gym hosted by the DHS National Honor Society.
Marauder Steel, under the direction of Cynthia Flaherty, will hold a live performance, and the very popular silent auction which is coordinated by Marianne Manzella, will be available during the carnival and first half of the game, with winners being selected at half time. Winners do not need to be present and tickets can be purchased prior to the event by calling Manzella at 366-9300.
The live draft for the game will be held at 7 p.m. with the game starting approximately 15 minutes later. Ed Eaker will call the televised game on Access 12.
Proceeds from this year’s game will be donated to a variety of families in need as well as a few local organizations that are important to the faculty of the Dunkirk City School District. The selected families are the Davis, Cottrell and the Szach families. Each family has multiple students who attend Dunkirk and have experienced enormous challenges this school year. The Davis and Cottrell families both lost their homes to fire around the holiday season and the Szach family has been under financial crisis with a sudden medical emergency for mother Millie Szach.
Tickets for the game are $5 and can be purchased at the Dunkirk High School and Middle School main offices as well as Matt’s News. If anyone would like to make a donation, please contact Mike Green at 203-7204 and as always, your donation will be recognized during the broadcast of the game.
