Edwards wants to sell Dunkirk airport
Chautauqua County Executive Greg Edwards is calling for the sale of the Chautauqua County Airport in Dunkirk, but not in Jamestown.
“The viability of our airports is a process that is under constant review. The Dunkirk airport is not an essential service provided by the county as it is for people to fly in and out of with their private planes, which differs from the commercial airport operated by the county outside of Jamestown,” Edwards said during his 2013 State of the County address Wednesday night in Mayville.
“As a result, there is an effort under way to market the Dunkirk airport for sale to a private entity which would eliminate the county’s costs for operating this general aviation airport, enable us to focus on our Chautauqua County Airport (in Jamestown) and encourage the development of the area around the Dunkirk airport by private investors.”
Sam Arcadipane, the county’s director of airports and parks, said in an interview earlier this month that the Chautauqua County Airport in Dunkirk “is close to breaking even as far as its budget.”
The Dunkirk Airport is a general aviation airport located on Middle Road in the town of Sheridan. Fueling and maintenance of aircraft are provided by Dunkirk Aviation.
