Lions provide warmth for local youth

The Dunkirk Fredonia Lions Club purchased 40 winter jackets that were given to youngsters in the Dunkirk Fredonia community before Christmas. The boys’ and girls’ jackets ranged in sizes from newborn up to size 16. All of the jackets were given to local charities such as the Willow Mission and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. Lions President Judith Cole coordinated the activity at the Willow Mission along with Pete Notaro at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton’s Incarceration Ministry. Another agency also participated.

The Dunkirk Fredonia Lions Club decided to coordinate this project for its first annual drive. The purpose of this activity was to ensure that no child goes without a new, warm coat during the cold winter months. Every year, many families are hard-pressed to afford new coats for their children. The Lions wanted parents to be able to give their child in need a new coat, not a “hand-me-down.”

The drive was a huge success. Currently, the Dunkirk Fredonia Lions Club is purchasing new jackets for its 2013 December Outreach. Any community member interested in participating with this activity by donating a new jacket with tags, or donating money can contact Sally Olow at 366-6645 or zoequilt@roadrunner.com. Checks should be made out to the Dunkirk Fredonia Lions Club and sent to Dunkirk-Fredonia Lions Club, P.O. Box 44, Dunkirk, N.Y. 14048.
