Kiwanis names Students of the Month
The Kiwanis Students of the Month for December are Alison Burdick from Fredonia High School and Lucas Julian from Dunkirk High School.
Burdick is a senior at Fredonia High School, but as she is a participant in SUNY Fredonia’s 3-1-3 program, she is also considered a freshman in college. She is the daughter of Christine and Scott Burdick. She feels lucky to have a supportive family.
Burdick is active academically and in extracurricular activities. She has made her school’s honor roll every quarter. She takes advanced or AP courses whenever possible, including U.S. history, psychology and statistics. She has been a member of French club and mock trial, as well as holding a position on student council. One of her favorite activities through student council was participating in “Santa’s Workshop,” during which she helped younger children with Christmas crafts and activities on Saturday mornings. She was also a part of “Sleep Out for the Homeless,” raising money through pledges and sleeping outside in cold weather. Burdick is also a member of the Key Club, which does community service. Through Key Club, she helped with the MS walk and the Special Olympics, which was a particularly memorable experience for her.
Julian is currently ranked first in his class at Dunkirk High School with an unweighted average of 95.5 percent. He has taken numerous AP tests and courses, receiving Jamestown Community College and Niagara University credit for various courses.
Julian has been a member of the varsity tennis team since ninth grade and the JV and varsity soccer teams. He has participated in NCSA summer soccer, Babe Ruth baseball, is currently a varsity wrestler and National Honor Society member. Julian has volunteered his time at Chautauqua Rural Ministries, The Friendly Kitchen, in the high school library renovations, at various National Honor Society events, and tutors children after school several hours a week. Julian enjoys hunting and fishing, outdoor activities and spending time with family and friends.
Julian was a Dunkirk High School Student of the Month in October 2012. He placed first in the national History Day Regionals. He has received the JV soccer Booster Award in ninth grade, the AP Scholar Award and the JCC College Connections Student of the Year Award in 11th grade. He is on the JCC part-time students Dean’s List and received the Rensselaer Medal Award for academic achievement for science and math.
