Cattaraugus County Sports Banquet

The 11th Annual Cattaraugus County Sports Hall of Fame Banquet will be held on Saturday, March 23, at the Little Valley Legion beginning at 6 pm.

Each of the 12 school districts within the county have selected one outstanding individual to be honored at this year’s event.

This year’s inductees include: Rich Hill (Cattaraugus-Little Valley), Lou Selan (Gowanda), Don Scholla (Olean), Greg Dahlman (West Valley), Chris Blocher (Allegany-Limestone), Tom Derx (Portville), Robin Maycock (Randolph), Melissa Ward (Franklinville), Steve Noll, (Hinsdale) Phil Tanner (Pioneer), Chuck Oyler (Salamanca) and Ed Ahrens (Ellicottville).

Softball team to Host Spaghetti Dinner Sunday

The Fredonia State softball team will be hosting a spaghetti dinner today from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Dunkirk Moose Lodge on Lake Shore Drive. They will be serving all-you-can eat spaghetti, meatballs, side salad, bread and dessert.

Along with the food, there will also be locally donated raffle baskets. The team members will be waiting tables and mingling during the event.

2013 Dunkirk Little League Registration

Registration for those interested in playing in the Dunkirk Little League will be held on Thursday, March 7, from 6-8 p.m., in the Dunkirk High School cafeteria.

The cost is $40 for baseball, softball and T-Ball and $50 for Senior League baseball.

A parent or guardian must accompany any new or returning players and all new players must present a state-certified birth certificate. Hospital and baptismal certificates will not be accepted.

Babe Ruth Try-outs

The Brocton-Portland Babe Ruth try-outs will be held Saturday, March 9 from 1-2:30 p.m. at the Brocton Central School gymnasium.

Players should bring a glove and copy of their birth certificate.

Players should 13-15 by April 30.

Youth Basketball Tournament

North American Youth Sports’ annual spring basketball tournament, being held at Randolph Central School April 19-21, still has openings for both boys and girls teams interested in competing.

The tournament will feature 10 different brackets including: 5th-6th Grade boys and girls; 7th Grade boys and girls; 8th Grade boys and girls; 9th-10th Grade boys and girls; 11th-12th Grade boys and girls. All divisions are based on the grade the players are currently in.

Entry fee for the tournament is $110 and guarantees each team at least two games. Awards will be presented in each bracket. Entry deadline is March 29.

Hill, Selan to Be Honored at Banquet

The 11th Annual Cattaraugus County Sports Hall of Fame Banquet will be held Saturday, March 23 at the Little Valley Legion beginning at 6 p.m. Each of the 12 school districts within the county have selected one outstanding individual to be honored at this year’s event.

Locally, Rich Hill from Cattaraugus and Lou “Looch” Selan from Gowanda will be inducted into the County Hall of Fame following a buffet dinner and introduction of previous inductees in attendance.

Hill has been a top official for high school basketball over the past 22 seasons. He was also a member of the 1972-73 undefeated Cattaraugus High School varsity basketball team that won the Section VI crown.

Selan was a member the Gowanda Tigers semi-pro football team that won the Western New York Championship in 1948. Lou was also a catcher for baseball and fast pitch softball town teams for many years. In 1966, he, along with Vic Witherell and Art Palumbo, were the original coaches for the Gowanda Jets midget football team. In 1968, the Jets won Gowanda’s first ever midget league Super Bowl championship.
