Civilette takes 18th at state meet

CORNELL – Fredonia’s Matt Civilette had a strong showing at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association indoor track and field championships Saturday.

The Fredonia junior entered the competition ranked 26th out of 31. However, he jumped 42-feet-11 inches to take 18th place.

“He was very consistent going into the meet,” Fredonia coach Mike Marshall said. “With that type of performance it was enough to go from 26 to 18.”

The last Fredonia athlete to advance to the indoor state finals was John Conti in 2009.

“Overall, one of his first jumps this year was around 41-feet,” Marshall noted. “Throughout the season, he continued to improve. He broke his wrist a month ago and missed two weeks. He came back strong and improved his PR through sectionals to make the states. We are looking forward to having him again next year.”
