Lefort makes NCAA indoor field in heptathlon
Spencer Lefort has qualified for NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championship meet this weekend in Naperville, Ill.
Lefort, a senior, secured his spot by winning the ECAC Division III men’s heptathlon on Saturday with 4,946 points on the banked track at the New Balance Armory – a new school record, SUNYAC record, and ECAC meet record score.
His score, converted to a flat-track total of 4,921 points, is third best in the nation heading into nationals. Only junior Zach Anderson of Wisconsin-Stout and junior Maxell Dunne of St. Thomas (Minn.) have better scores this year with 5,132 points and 5,025 points, respectively.
Other scheduled participants are junior Alex Kovalik, sophomore Tyler Mettille, and freshman Andrew Milhoan of Mount Union; senior Gavin Yseth of St. Thomas (Minn.); senior Michael Blair of Tufts; sophomore Brandon Zarnoth of Wisconsin-Eau Claire; sophomore Eric Larson of Central; senior Brian Thill of Wisconsin-Stevens; junior Cameron Clause of Gustavus Adolphus; and sophomore Matt Hunter of Ohio Wesleyan.
The championship event will be held over two days – this Friday and Saturday – at the Al B. Carisu Track in Naperville, Ill. The competition is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Friday with the 60-meter dash, followed by the high jump, the shot put, and the long jump. Saturday’s schedule begins at 11 a.m. with the 60-meter hurdles, followed by the pole vault and the 1,000 meters.
Lefort will be making his second trip to an NCAA meet. He finished 15th in the decathlon at the NCAA D-III Outdoor Track & Field Championship meet last May in Claremont, Calif.
