Lots to gain, lose

By KELLY BEERS

The month of March is recognized for Brain Injury Awareness. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 1.7 million people a year are inflicted with a Traumatic Brain Injury. Traumatic Brain injury can occur to anyone at anytime and no two people with brain injury are exactly alike.

A traumatic brain injury can occur as the result of a car accident, assault, gunshot wound, aneurysm, stroke, infection and concussion.

The leading causes of Traumatic Brain Injury are falls, motor vehicle accidents and assaults and males are 1.5 times as likely as females to be afflicted with a Traumatic Brain Injury.

Once afflicted, the person and their caregivers’ lives change forever. A person who suffers from a TBI experiences changes physically, cognitively, emotionally, behaviorally and psychosocially. These people require ongoing treatment and management from their caregivers as well as the professional services available to them.

Some traumatic brain injuries can be prevented. Such measures of prevention of traumatic brain injury include:

Automobile safety: airbags, seatbelts, child safety seats.

Environmental modifications: guard rails, lighting.

Childproofing: gates, safe conditions for play.

Helmets: bicycle, four wheeler, motorcycle, snowmobile.

Awareness of your surroundings and the potential for danger.
