Male beauty pageant to raise funds for cystic fibrosis

On Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Williams Center Multi-Purpose Room, the sisters of Delta Phi Epsilon will hold the fifth annual Deepher Dude, an all-male beauty pageant. All of the proceeds benefit the National Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, one of the sorority’s four philanthropies. The event should last for about two hours. Anyone is welcome to attend. Tickets are currently on sale in the ticket office. The cost for a student is $5 and the cost for community members is $10.

This year there are 13 male contestants. Each contestant will participate in an interview, formal wear, swim wear, and talent portion of the competition. They will be judged on a point system. At the end, the man with the most points will be crowned Deepher Dude 2013. They will hold this title until next year’s competition. Judges include the 2012 Deepher Dude Joey Sienkiewicz, Delta Phi Epsilon Chapter Advisor Brattnay Crawley-Spry, recent graduate Nicole Matteson and local business owner, Perry.

At the event there will also be a basket raffle that includes prizes from the Buffalo Bills, the Buffalo Sabres, the Buffalo Bandits, Darien Lake Theme Park, Tops Markets, Gordo’s Hot’s, and Chautauqua Health and Fitness.

Nationally, since 1967, Delta Phi Epsilon has contributed more than $1 million to research for a cure for cystic fibrosis. The Epsilon Eta chapter at SUNY Fredonia has set a goal to raise more than $1,000 this year. Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States (70,000 worldwide). A defective gene and its protein product cause the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections; and obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food.

“Deepher Dude has become a fun tradition that the sisters look forward to every year,” said Jenny Capitano, the sorority’s vice president of programming. “Cystic fibrosis is such a terrible disease and we would like to do as much as we can to help find a cure!”
