Public input sought for update to regional open space conservation plan

A meeting date for the New York State Open Space Conservation Plan Regional Advisory Committee (RAC) members has been scheduled for Chautauqua County, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Regional Director Abby Snyder has announced. DEC and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation are co-lead agencies of the New York’s Open Space Conservation Plan, a plan that serves as a blueprint for the state’s land conservation efforts to increase protection of the state’s significant natural, scenic, recreational, historic and cultural resources.

The Open Space Plan was last updated in 2009. RAC members include representatives from each of Region 9’s six counties (Erie, Niagara, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Allegany and Wyoming) as well as at-large members. Members are charged with providing input to update the previous Open Space Conservation Plan and will identify the types and locations of open space resources and various open space conservation tools and methods. In addition, the regional committee will provide recommendations on policies, such as stewardship, and regulations.

The Chautauqua County Open Space meeting is scheduled for March 21 at 6 p.m. and will take place at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History, 311 Curtis St., Jamestown. Locations for additional meetings to be scheduled in each of Region 9’s six counties will be announced shortly.

Members of the public are invited to attend the meeting and contribute input. If you, your municipality, or your organization have any comments or suggestions for regional open space acquisitions, priority projects, policy, or plan updates, please consider attending.

The current Open Space Conservation Plan is available online at www.dec.ny.gov/docs/lands-forests-pdf/osp09eappa.pdf.

If you are unable to attend one of the upcoming meeting but would like to contribute suggestions to the Open Space Conservation Plan for Chautauqua County, you are welcome to send your suggestions to DEC via email at region9@gw.dec.state.ny.us.
