Twenty years ago — 1993

A gala event was recently held at The Bookmark, 3 Center St., Russo Bldg., Fredonia in conjunction with the store’s 3rd anniversary. It featured Bulgarian-born Georgian Banov, world-renowned singer, musician and writer. Georgian escaped to the United States from Bulgaria in his pursuit of freedom. He now travels extensively to present his ministry, “Celebration International,” which is devoted to carrying on the evangelical calling of God in his life.

Thirty years ago – 1983

John Lakas, manager of the M&L Marina, said that in spite of reports that the Dunkirk Yacht Club is considering buying the marina, he has a lease on it for the coming year and intends to keep operating it as a commercial venture. Marina owner David Ridgeway now lives in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Forty years ago – 1973

David Vacanti, son of Caroline Vacanti, 95 Central Ave., Fredonia, was awarded first prize in the annual student paper contest sponsored by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers at Colorado State University.

Fifty years ago – 1963

“We did it!” said 13-year-olds Nancy Armelia, daughter of Catherine Deland of Fredonia and Beverly Schroeder, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Burdette Schroeder of Laona, after completing a hike to the Jamestown airport and back, a distance of about 53 miles.
