Fredonia: New hire part of tax hike
We understand why Fredonia Mayor Stephen Keefe is proposing a budget that includes a 3.5 percent tax increase for residents in 2013-14. We also understand that health insurance and pension costs are increasing.
But it brings it back to an issue that was voted on in January when almost no consequences were considered in hiring a new Department of Public Works employee. Though not a unanimous vote, the board still moved forward with hiring the employee.
Now they have to be reminded of the pain to pay for it. A new hire with total compensation costs about $60,000. When the board looks to cut costs and it begins to do its regular act of nickel and diming, village residents need to remember there was $60,000 on the table that could have been cut.
That cannot happen now.
