Bernard W. “Benny” Kaus
Bernard W. “Benny” Kaus, 91, of Dunkirk, died Monday (March 18, 2013) at Brooks Memorial Hospital, following a brief illness,
with his loving family at his side. He was born May 11, 1921, in Dunkirk, son of the late, Lawrence and Helen (Jankowski) Kaus. A graduate of Dunkirk Industrial High School, Bernard served during WWII with the US Army and received the American Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and WWII Victory Medal. He was a retired employee of Allegheny Ludlum Steel in Dunkirk and also St. Vincent’s Home. His memberships include St. Elizabeth Ann Seton R. C. Church, Kosciuszko Polish Home, and the FirstWard Falcon Club. Surviving are his sons: Ralph (Judi Helman) Kaus of Fredonia, and Paul (Sue) Kaus of Dunkirk, six grandchildren: Jennifer (Jason) Richards; Scott (Karla) Irwin; Ryan Irwin; Stephen Kaus; Kelly (Mike) Dougherty and Andrew Kaus. Five great-grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Ann (Johnson) Kaus who died August 2, 1981; infant son James, a daughter Linda Irwin; sisters Rose Wilemski and Sophie Bienko; and brothers Stanley, John, Louie, Harry and Frank Kaus. Relatives and friends are welcome to call at the R. Mackowiak Funeral Home Inc., 56 East Doughty Street in Dunkirk on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Thursday morning at 10 o’clock in St. Elizabeth Ann Seton R. C. Church. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials can be made to HOSPICE of Chautauqua County, 20 Fairmount Avenue, Lakewood, NY 14263.
