The Resource Center to hold informational session March 27

Changes at the state and federal level will mean changes in the ways The Resource Center provides services and supports to people with disabilities and their families. To help service recipients and their families understand the impending changes, The Resource Center will hold an informational meeting Wednesday.

The meeting will be held in TRC’s administrative offices, located at 200 Dunham Ave. (the former Celoron school), beginning at 6 p.m. Those planning to attend should park in the rear lot off Allegheny Avenue and use the far lefthand entrance on the back of the building.

The most significant changes in the ways The Resource Center provides services will result from New York state’s plan to implement a Medicaid managed-care system, in which each person with a developmental disability will be assigned an annual amount of money that he or she will use to pay for services and supports. For years, people with disabilities have received supports under a fee-for-service model, in which agencies like The Resource Center were reimbursed for the services they provided.

Currently, New York state does not plan to have a transition period as it moves from the fee-for-service model to the managed-care model. The Resource Center is concerned that service recipients and their families who have not been following this issue will be caught off guard when the state switches to managed care. That is the main reason TRC is holding the March 27 meeting.

The Resource Center also hopes to use the meeting as an opportunity to strengthen families’ ability to advocate for themselves. In recent weeks, families have come together to protest Governor Andrew Cuomo’s plan to cut $120 million from the budgets of organizations like The Resource Center. TRC officials want to help families set up a system they can use to effectively advocate.
