Twenty years ago — 1993

When 20-year-old Ellis Rochez of Gowanda started dancing 12 years ago, she had no idea she would be receiving national and international recognition for traditional Irish step dancing. The Fredonia State junior economics major has earned first-place honors in senior ladies division championships in Montreal, St. Catharines, Ohio and Louisiana. Ellis also qualified for the world championship in Ireland for five years in a row and is currently ranked third in the eastern region of the United States.

Thirty years ago – 1983

Christopher C. Barton, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Barton of 115 So. Portage St., Westfield has been named Student of the Week at Westfield Academy and Central School. The current class treasurer, he lettered in basketball and was a member of the varsity track team. Chris received the Mike Samoni Athletic Award. He also was the 1982 Boys State representative. He plans to attend St. Bonaventure University to major in journalism.

Forty years ago – 1973

As a Lenten special, Steve’s Drive-in on Route 20 at Swamp Road, Fredonia is serving a 99-cent fish dinner, complete with french fries and a crisp salad.

Fifty years ago – 1963

Reports that the same type of fire that swept Bellport High School on Long Island could happen in Dunkirk schools were ruled untrue today when a school official stated, “Our new Schools 3, 4 and 5 are fireproof buildings.”
