TLC’s Rehabilitation Services Director hosts HealthQuest WNY Lymphedema Program

HealthQuest WNY is an initiative of Lake Erie Regional Health System of New York designed to provide health and wellness information, resources and support to the community.

During April, HealthQuest WNY is hosting a program for area residents featuring TLC Health Network’s Director of Rehabilitation Services Karen Kaminski, PT.

The program, “Under-standing Lymphedema,” will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10 at Academy Place, 1 School St., Gowanda. This program is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be available.

During the one-hour program, Kaminski will provide an overview on the causes and symptoms of lymphedema, strategies on how to avoid the condition and methods for diagnosis and treatment of the problem. Lymphedema typically occurs in the arm or leg as the result of blockages which cause fluid build up and swelling. A common cause of the condition is the removal of lymph nodes, usually during treatment for cancer. Lymphedema Awareness Day is recognized nationally during early March. Attendees at Kaminski’s program are encouraged to ask questions about themselves or loved ones. The topics of gender differences with lymphedema and services available to help individuals cope with the problem will also be discussed.

For more information or to register for the program, call 951-7070 or email events@lakeeriehealth.org. Reservations are recommended but not required.

Kaminski has been a physical therapist for 20 years, graduating from Daemen College in 1993. She began her professional career at Saint Vincent Health Care Center where she worked for seven years, specializing in lymphedema, osteoporosis and aquatic therapy.

Kaminski also worked at Westfield Memorial Hospital for three years prior to joining the staff at TLC Health Network in 2003. With her main office at Lake Shore Health Care Center in Irving, Kaminski continues to treat patients in the Outpatient Physical Therapy Depart-ment.
