Recent weather is putting a damper on local fishing
Fishing opportunities will depend on the whims of the weather and which way the wind blows.
On Monday, the Dunkirk Harbor was packed with ice, affording little opportunity for fishing from the pier. Those anglers I did talk to reported the fishing (catching) was slow. However, those anglers that sought out the creeks did well on the same day. My sources tell me that several anglers connected with a dozen fish while fishing Cattaraugus Creek on the same day. Rick Miller in Irving also reported anglers doing well in the “Cat” between the mouth of the creek and Route 5. Most of the fish are rainbows in the silvery 22- to 24-inch long range with a few brown trout and a few bigger fish also being caught.
Miller reported that one angler did recently try their luck fishing offshore for perch with little luck. Most of his luck was used trying to get back to shore when the wind shifted and brought the ice back in.
Anglers are reporting close to 8 inches of ice remaining on areas of Chautauqua Lake, but a warm forecast and rain could make that disappear in a hurry. Those that have been ice fishing report a few calicos, small sized yellow perch and some decent sized bluegills. Walleye season is closed.
