George E. Burkland Jr.

George E. Burkland, Jr., age 87, of Fredonia, NY, died Saturday March 30, 2013 at Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk.

George was born September 17, 1925 in Busti, NY to the late George E. Burkland and Ruth Holmquist Burkland. He graduated from Jamestown High School. In 1943 George enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served on LST’s and carriers during the D-Day invasion of Normandy, France on June 6, 1944. He was injured during the invasion and Honorably Discharged in April 1946. Following his discharge from the service he moved to Alaska and was a member of the Alaskan Land Development Association. George stayed on the West Coast where he attended College, graduating with a degree in political science and law. He was employed for a time in the legal department at Boeing Aircraft and at Allstate Insurance Co. in Seattle, Washington.

Returning to Western New York in 1954, he continued his career in insurance, working for Empire State Mutual in the legal department. He then joined The Travelers Insurance Co. and worked there until purchasing the Record Agency in 1961 in Forestville, NY. He later purchased other insurance agencies in Silver Creek and Dunkirk.

George was a Charter Member of the Dunkirk Chamber of Commerce, where he served as President. Also a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he also served as President of the Board of Trustees. He was a member of the M&T Bank Advisory Board, and owned and operated the Revere Inn in Silver Creek, NY and Record Realty Corp. He served as a Trustee of the David G. Glenn Insurance Agency and was a member of the Shorewood Country Club.

George was a Mason for over 55 years. He was a member of the Silver Lodge, F&AM, #757, the Shrine Club and Jamestown Consistory. Also the National LST Association, the New York State LST Association, and a Charter Member of the LST # 138 Association. He was a member of the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans Association, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. George was an active member of the Greencrest Homeowners Association. He was also an active outdoor enthusiast and belonged to the Cockaigne Ski resort where his family owned a winter home. He was an avid hunter in New York and Pennsylvania.

George is survived by his wife Doris M. (Day) Burkland. His daughter Nancy Wurst (Fred) of Atlanta, Georgia and his son Michael Burkland of Fredonia; 2 grandchildren: Ashley Wurst and Zachary Burkland. Besides his parents, George was predeceased by a son, Stephen Burkland and his sisters: Geneva, Irene, Janice, Carol and Garnet.

Friends may call Thursday from 7-9 p.m. at the Larson-Timko Funeral Home, 20 Central Ave., Fredonia, NY where a funeral service will be held Friday at a time to be announced.
