Spring and summer fashion trends of 2013
It’s that time of year sayonara snow and blistery winds, hello spring! With warm weather and sun-filled days quickly approaching, our thoughts are inevitably turned to days at the pool, barbecues, and walks in the park. As the seasons and our activities change, so do our wardrobes. If you are looking to shake things up in your closet this spring, you have picked a golden year to do so. Whether you prefer to use what you already have in your closet, purchase a few new pieces, or do a complete wardrobe makeover, this season’s trends are versatile enough to be workable and wearable for anyone to look and feel good.
Spring and summer 2013 are bringing an array of different trends to the department store racks; however, some are best left to the models on the runways. There are a few that realistically translate into real-world, day to day attire: bold stripes, ruffles, black and white, bold colors, and statement sunglasses.
Stripes: they are straightforward, flattering, and timeless. As stated by Glamour magazine, “with denim, they’re all-American; with navy, they’re natural-chic; worn head to toe, they’re plain cool.” If you do not already have something striped in your closet, this is a safe trend to add to your list. And of course, vertical stripes are always slimming. Who doesn’t want that?
Ruffles are soft, frilly and this season can be found from collars, to sleeves, to hemlines. They can easily be dressed up or down, worn to the office or a night on the town. If you are seeking a classic feminine and flirty look, ruffles may be the trend to work into your closet this season.
The traditional black and white combination is easy to accomplish at any budget and can suit a wide variety of style tastes. It is appropriate year round and ultra-chic for day or night without a great deal of effort that’s always a clean and polished look. Black and white is also easily transitional to sleek black and black or delicate white and white. For example, coming from a day at the office, trade out your white top to a black blouse and you’re ready for an evening out with your friends. Although it can be a challenge to keep spotless, white can be easily layered with different fabrics or patterns.
Looking to make the ultimate fashion statement to add life to your closet? Then incorporate some color into your wardrobe! Color can be an instant mood booster, and this season it is dominating the runways and racks. Unsure as to how to pull off a bold color look? Try pairing neon accessories or brightly colored pumps with a neutral outfit to keep your look clean and streamlined. Monochromatic head-to-toe schemes are a daring way to embrace the color trend; add a splash of contrast (i.e. scarf) to the look, and you’re well on your way.
Statement sunglasses are a simple way to add a touch of OMG (oh my gosh) to any outfit. Simple as that. These can be exaggerated frames on the verge of being “over the top” in color, shape, or size. The cat-eye is fun and has resurfaced so many times through the years that they could be considered classic.
If seasonal trends are not your cup of tea, there are a few staple and versatile items that should be in every woman’s closet and are safe to rotate year-round so that you never feel drab or like there is nothing to wear. Blazers, cardigans, white blouses and shirts, pencil skirts, A-line dresses, trousers, a reliable pair of boots and neutral pumps help create an overall refined look.
Whether you are choosing one trend or all of them, the most important thing is to pick one that best fits your personality and lifestyle and makes you feel like the very best version of yourself. You should be confident in what you are wearing, so don’t pick a trend that brings any discomfort! Don’t let the trend define you; you define it!
Sarah Bennett of Nordstrom said it best when she stated, “Fashion is a form of self-expression. It’s a way to tell the world who we are and who we aspire to be without saying anything. If we didn’t have fashion, we’d all be dressed the same; part of our identity would be erased.”
Of course, times have not changed in that regard. “Todays” styles come and go, but women have always sought out ways to enhance their looks in the “Yesterdays” of any era.
