Police seek man in connection with Dunkirk shooting

Dunkirk Police are seeking a man in connection with Friday’s shooting in the city of Dunkirk. A warrant for Montel Cooper has been issued for first-degree reckless endangerment and second-degree menacing.

Dunkirk Police responded to King and Main streets Friday evening at 10 p.m. for the report of a subject shot. Upon arrival, a 23-year-old male Dunkirk resident was found wounded. The victim was removed from the scene by rescue personnel with non-life threatening injuries. The victim is believed not to have been the intended target and was standing across Main Street nearby when shots were fired at a second victim.

Investigation found Cooper was the shooter and fled the scene prior to officers’ arrival. There is an outstanding warrant for Cooper for the above charges. As the investigation continues, additional charges are expected. Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office and Fredonia Police Department assisted with crowd control and the investigation. Dunkirk Fire Department and Alstar Ambulance also responded to the scene.

Cooper is believed to have shoulder length dread locks at this time and his last known address was 522 Park Ave., Dunkirk. Cooper has ties to Dunkirk and Jamestown areas.
