Devils improve to 10-0 by downing Wittenberg, 12-5

Fredonia State’s perfect start to the season continued Sunday with a 12-5 win over the Wittenberg Tigers in women’s lacrosse.

Marissa Cussins and Katie Kleine had three goals and one assist each for the Blue Devils while goalkeeper Casey Chiesa made 11 saves, as the Blue Devils improved to 10-0.

The Blue Devils scored the first three goals of the game and led 5-2 before Wittenberg’s Kellen Morrissey scored in the last minute of the first half.

Cussins and Kleine opened the second-half scoring, the Tigers tallied once, and then the Blue Devils broke the game open with five unanswered goals by five different players – Juliana Kotas, Katie Glagolev, Cussins, Rachael Reinis and Kleine.

Kleine was the Blue Devils’ top field player with four ground balls, three caused turnovers and three draw controls. She was coming off a four-goal, nine-assist game Saturday vs. New Paltz. The 13 points and nine assists set new Fredonia State single-game records.

Also Saturday, the Blue Devils set team single-game records with 35 points and 14 assists while Chiesa became the all-time saves leader. Sarah Wright made 521 saves from 2005 through 2008. Chiesa had 522 saves after Saturday’s game, and added 11 to her total Sunday.

Next up for the Blue Devils is a key SUNYAC contest Tuesday vs. Geneseo at University Stadium. Game time is 4 p.m.
